Artist’s Statement: Unlike most people, busy studying their smartphones, the built environment and my surroundings fascinate me. In my paintings I explore the effects of light, shadows, and transitory
reflections upon solid, man-made surfaces. I look at rather than through the reflections and shadows, finding them as tangible and powerful as the iron, stone and glass. I am particularly drawn to the strong, contrasting light of early morning or late afternoon in downtown Manhattan, in Venice, and Morocco.
I use photographs I have taken as reference points when I paint. I enhance the powerful abstract shapes formed by the ephemeral, fugitive shadows and reflections upon the building surfaces.
